Craft and Games
I started brainstorming some ideas as I was driving home from the planning meeting yesterday (plus searching the internet today) and it looks like some of the ideas have been used before—which is fine but hopefully we can come up with a new spin on them. If nothing else, hopefully, these ideas will allow all of us to come up with even more creative ideas.
- Charades—game for Monday as getting to know you—act out your favorite animal (no sounds of course), sport/activity, food
- Nature Hunt—every girl must have one of each item on the list and then for craft they can draw an animal/robot/or ??? and incorporate the items they found (rock, leave, twig, feather, etc.) and then name their creation or sun prints http://www.makingfriends.com/summer/sunprints.htm or self-portraits http://www.education.com/activity/article/Nature_Self_Portrait_second/
- The game of Jenga (I’ve never played so not sure exactly how it’s played…I just know you have to pull out a block and then add it to the top)—if there were 2 sets of the game, each group could be split into 2 teams. Winning group is whichever group doesn’t knock it down or it can be a camp wide competition to see which group can make the tallest building.
- Sand art with bottles (either edible or not) http://www.myrainbowdust.com/category-s/44.htm
- String sculpture http://www.essortment.com/hobbies/kidscraftsart_sxbr.htm
- CD photo frame http://www.makingfriends.com/photocd.htm
- Build a greenhouse http://www.education.com/activity/article/Soda_Bottle_Greenhouse/
- For color/sound day– http://www.education.com/activity/article/windchime_kindergarten/ or http://www.education.com/activity/article/Play_Rainbow_preschool/
Oh and have I mentioned how much I love the internet! Searching for CD crafts lead me to all these other really great ideas.
Looking forward to the next brainstorming session.
Fondly,
Kellie Wilson (still working on a camp name….)

Great craft ideas- I like the green house and I think we could use an old CD instead of the lid for the wind chime craft. I like that they are promoting patterns with the beads. Thanks for all the low cost ideas to add to Kelly’s amazing craft list.

I just did Artist Trading Cards with the 4th grade which was amazing (and of course my 1st grade boyts had to make some too. We used recycled card stock cut into 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch cards (from the paper that goes between the toilet tissue and paper towels at Costco). The kids used several different mediums like shaved crayons which we melted with an iron, paint, markers, collage and stamps.
We could also use old CD’s with op art by covering one side with paper and they then decorate the paper with tessellations (like Escher) in black and white-when they are hung up they look amazing. I have also done CD fish where you turn the CD into a fish with giant google eyes and it can be hung from the ceiling. I usually use craft foam but you can also use construction paper. The art I have done this year can be seen on Artsonia if anyone wants the link, let me know. Most of it is more fine art but some of it is craft art.
For the kids’ birthday, we gathered rocks and painted them-for some reason, kids really like to paint rocks…..

Oh and the self portrait idea that Kellie left…there is a GREAT book called Look What I Did with a Leaf! by Morteza Sohi that has loads of ideas about creating animals and other collage pictures with leaves, twigs, etc.
I have also done flower pounding art where you lay the flowers out in a pattern on paper or fabric that is put on top of cardboard or a stack of newspaper. Then you put newspaper or wax paper over the top and smash them with a hammer. The dyes from the flowers and leaves are transferred to the paper or fabric below. Trader Joe’s will often give you their almost dead flowers if you get there late in the evening or early in the morning. Reds, dark oranges, blues and purples work best.
