Oh and the self portrait idea that Kellie left...there is a GREAT book called Look What I Did with a Leaf! by Morteza Sohi that has loads of ideas about creating animals and other collage pictures with leaves, twigs, etc.

I have also done flower pounding art where you lay the flowers out in a pattern on paper or fabric that is put on top of cardboard or a stack of newspaper. Then you put newspaper or wax paper over the top and smash them with a hammer. The dyes from the flowers and leaves are transferred to the paper or fabric below. Trader Joe's will often give you their almost dead flowers if you get there late in the evening or early in the morning. Reds, dark oranges, blues and purples work best.

I just did Artist Trading Cards with the 4th grade which was amazing (and of course my 1st grade boyts had to make some too. We used recycled card stock cut into 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch cards (from the paper that goes between the toilet tissue and paper towels at Costco). The kids used several different mediums like shaved crayons which we melted with an iron, paint, markers, collage and stamps.
We could also use old CD's with op art by covering one side with paper and they then decorate the paper with tessellations (like Escher) in black and white-when they are hung up they look amazing. I have also done CD fish where you turn the CD into a fish with giant google eyes and it can be hung from the ceiling. I usually use craft foam but you can also use construction paper. The art I have done this year can be seen on Artsonia if anyone wants the link, let me know. Most of it is more fine art but some of it is craft art.
For the kids' birthday, we gathered rocks and painted them-for some reason, kids really like to paint rocks.....

Now I can tell which word or characters are being fed to me from the Character Recognition software. Some of them are really hard to read. Save Shakespeare!

Great craft ideas- I like the green house and I think we could use an old CD instead of the lid for the wind chime craft. I like that they are promoting patterns with the beads. Thanks for all the low cost ideas to add to Kelly's amazing craft list.
